I was thinking of running LS1 coils on my L18, but am unsure if they would be suitable for wasted spark ignition ?

Will firing each coil twice as often as it would in the LS1 hurt the coil, or will the coil's performance suffer ? Will it "burn out" or whatever the equivalent may be ?

Just tossing up ideas at the moment - I have six outputs on the ecu, and not sure whether to run wasted spark and individual injection, or individual spark and batch injection.

hey dave.

i got something a little bit of topic but, would this work ?
setup by MSD for a honda (cant tell but i do assume it is 4cyl.)

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/MSD-IGNITION-SET ... dZViewItem

just a thought!

also, LS1 = v8 ?
a quad pack coil ??
eg;

are these what your talking about ??

lol, obviously i dont know much about ign. etc.

newayz. soz for getting off topic.
cya tomora
cheers,

Yep, those LS1 coils are what I've got (just the standard holden ones though).

I know little about this new-fangled efi and electronic ignition either

I got 4 of the LS1 coils cheap a while back, apparently they are good because you don't need an igniter as well (its built into the coil). They were recommended to me by a few people, I'm just not sure if you can fire them twice as often as normal without damaging them or affecting their performance ??

Unless you're doing twice the revs of the LS1 it will be firing at a similar frequency, the V8 fires twice as many times per revolution but it has twice as many coils :?

Yep, but with wasted spark ignition it will fire on compression AND exhaust stroke - ie each coil fires each revolution of the motor. The LS1 (I would assume) would only fire the coil for each cylinder on each compression stroke as the piston approaches TDC.

So, instead of firing cylinders in the order of 1,3,4,2, it'll be firing 1 AND 4 together, then 3 AND 2 together, then 1 AND 4 together again, then 3 AND 2 together again. So, they should fire twice as often (by my reckoning anyway)

Reason I can't do 1,3,4,2 is that I'm limited to either 5 or 6 triggers from the ecu (so 2 for spark and 4 for fuel injection). If I want to run 4 outputs for ignition, I only have one left for fuel injection (ie batch injection - fire all injectors simultaneously). Perhaps this may be better anyway ?

Or am I completely mistaken (could well be, as I'm new to this computer stuff) ?

well you have 2 outputs for spark

do you have a pic of the coils?

unles you run a waste spark like you said by wiring cylinder 1 and 4, to one output, 2 and 3 to the other, having the computer firing every revolution of the of the crank to creat the waste spark system and fire on compression stroke.

but i guess you have worked this out already :?

i haven't had much to do with programing ecu yet
