I'm thinking of using E85 fuel or similar in my SR20DE S15 Autech EFI n/a rally car Datsun 1600. I heard they might need JDM 100 RON.

The motor will be left completely standard (with standard Autech ECU, 11.7:1 compression, 272 degree cams). I have 3/8 fuel lines, a 180B fuel tank (10 Litres over standard).

But I am thinking that if I go with E85, I might run out of fuel, mid stage through a rally; as I heard fuel consumption can be up to 30% or more.

Can I use E85 for track use and or mix with 98 RON for rally (to keep the octane up)? We don't have 100RON here in Tassie. We have E85 at only one service station in Hobart, Avgas (100RON) at the airport or BP ultimate 98 from a fair few of servos.

Thoughts on type of fuel to use?

Any help appreciated.

I thought (and have read a lot) 11.7 was fine with pump fuel. even 95

nice engine! how are the headers fitment with the 1600? if your using Autech headers. clearance issues?

With that sort of compression plus the fact it is efi i would be using premiun unleaded or if you can afford it Elf. As to go to E85 you will need to change a few things with the fuel system plus probably best to stay with something readily available.

E85 is actually already blended with premium unleaded. Also a fuels octane rating isnt the only thing to consider when choosing the right fuel for you, octane is related to an engines ability to resist knocking/detonation so this combined with a high oxygen content.

Do you have control fuel or a approved fuel list for your rally class?

I am not currently planning on using the Autec headers in the 1600. I have an off-the-shelf Stewart Wilkins Rally set for SR20 n/a in a 1600, that I am aiming to use. I may modify the Autec ones at a later stage, but main aim is to get the car going for now. Mainly using the Stewart Wilkins ones as I :

1) already had a set anyway
2) convenience (fit straight in clearing the idler arm. Although they are slightly too low for rallying near the gearbox in my car - will modify as I want maximum protection from rocks, etc - ie need to be higher towards transmission tunnel near gearbox.
3) possible negligible difference in power output.

Re fuel. Staying with 98 RON would be the easiest option and most appealing - but I don't want to blow the engine up. As long as the fuel is commercially available I am fine. Might still aim for a blend of E85 (50%? or even 20% to keep octaine at or above 100), but any advice/thoughts is still good. Some still say 100 RON though.

Anyone else use these engines?

What management are you using? To even think about using E85 you're going to need bigger injectors and a retune to suit. Power might be down too since there is less energy per unit in E85 (it's great on turbos though).

I'm using the standard Autec ECU. I will use 98 octane to start with and see how we go.

Back in the day with 11.5:1 L blocks I used 10% methyl benzene now sold as toluol.
this will give over 100 RON with 98.

Note that toluol acts as a catalyst for methanol when mixed with petrol.
I have brewed many a mix over the years.
petrol 85,toluol 5, methanol 10, is a good mix with out changing injectors. the viscosity increase of the toluol is balanced by the
methanol. the methanol negates very cold temp issues with toluol. No probs with max 10%.

Thread from the dead. I am thinking of also running E85 for an Autech going in a Datsun roadster. Can anyone provide an update as to how to do this? Can the stock Autech ECU support E85? What tuners can help with this? Thanks

Contact PLMS, they have done this on a few autech rally cars. You will need a different Nissan ECU to accept the nisstune chip set.

I have spoken to Pete about this. There is no fuel flex sensor for the ECU he uses which from memory is a S14 DE ECU. He said you can run straight E85 and you can get about an extra 10-15hp.

My question is, if there is no fuel flex, and you fill your tank and the ethanol/petrol ratio isn't correct. How much effect will this have on the engine? Is it possible to add straight ethanol to the tank to get the correct ratio? I ask this because I read somewhere that when you fill up at the fuel station you will never get the same ratio each time..
