I hope to get back into this in the near future - looking after the parent's became too much for the wife and I, dad had another minor stroke, doctors said he couldn't go home, so they have recently had to move into a nursing home. So, once I clear out their house (including a heap of Datsun bits I stashed under their house nearly 30 years ago  ), I should get my spare time back again.

I'm in two minds as to the powerplant now though. Do I stick with the original plan for an injected, blown L18 or build a KA24DE-headed L-series, complete with gear-train driven cams and a custom (cast) rocker-cover and front timing cover for the head ? The intention being to make a look-alike LZ-series engine ?? Some of the work people like Les Colllins / Peter Mac have been doing is tempting me towards the KA24 head conversion.....

I had planned to build a twincam L-series to swap into my 1600 after finishing the blown 180B, but cleaning out the old man's place (including a number of his unfinished projects) has got me thinking that perhaps I have too many projects and not enough time.

Dave, I think most of us can relate to that. But don't give up now (or a few months ago when this thread was last updated!). If need just leave it for a bit longer. I don't know where the car is at now but if it's painted just bolt it back together, drop in a stock L18 and just enjoy your hard work until you have more time to focus on an engine, if the alternative is giving up.

I thought I had a lot of rust in my SSS but yours compared to mine is almost fly wire. Stick at it, because when you can (as i did) stand back and look a metal finished body that you know has zero rust.... well there is no better level of satisfaction.

Hey Dave,

Great build thread of your body work!
Did you end up finishing this 610 SSS coupe ie painted and engine fitted and being driven?
Keen to see pics of the finished product,
Recently bought a 1973 610 SSS coupe myself and have a bit of bodywork to do myself or get someone to do for me, haven't really done any body work on a car before so bit unsure as to whether i would be able to or not or just pay a professional to do it for me.
I dont think my coupe has anywhere near as much rust as yours used to have (fingers X), you never know though until it is completely stripped back, at current the only visable/most noticable rust spots are the drivers side rear lower quarter and the tyre well in the boot

Sorry to take so long to reply, I've been on a boat crossing the South Atlantic Ocean for nearly two months, with no internet. Sadly, I still haven't finished the SSS. Bodywork is complete, virtually ready for final coats. Maybe a weekend of rubbing down, etc, then another weekend for colour.

Lots of other bits are half done as well, and I have accumulated most of the stuff I need to finish. I need to sort out lots of stuff and clear my shed then get stuck into it again. Hopefully one day soon, although I also need to get the race 1600 going again so I can hit the track ......
