 Post subject: 180b stub axle 5 bolts

Hi, I require a rear stub axle 5 bolt conversion, current one is a modified 180b 4 bolt but the person who modified it to 5 bolt drilled the holes too close to one of the edges and welded bolts in instead of studs, is there a better option for the conversion like a more modern factory 5 bolt unit that would work? Robb

Z31 5 stud axles will work. You need to change the bearings in order to do this.

The inner bearing's ID changes, but there isn't a bearing available in the same width. So you can chose a 'thinner' bearing and have a spacer made to make it work.

Plenty of people have done that.

There is a few options

1. Find a set of 240k arms (they have the bigger inside bearing that matches the hr31 5 stud hub), get a 5 stud hub from a HR31 or Z31 californian or turbo model. Very important if you buy hubs to make sure they come with the tapered spacer that sits between the bearings, otherwise you are going to drop a lot of coin on getting some made unless you can find factory ones.

The 240k arms will also require the shock mount to be cut off your 180b trailing arm and welded over.

2. Fix the current hub you have. No idea why they put bolts instead of studs, weld up the holes (welding must be good, no shitty gasless mig), get them redrilled & install studs.

Downside is you will still have the smaller axle diameter (30mm), whereas the Z31/HR31 gear tapers to 35mm on the internal side, these are stronger and are where the standard 180b/1600 hubs snap.

If you go the 240k arm route, you'd want to make sure you get the hubs to if you are staying with half shafts as you will need the inner companion flange from the 240k hub. If you are converting to CV, make sure you get the companion flange for HR31 hub, reason is because the spline count is different/larger.

Yep same for a 1600, 180b and 1600 trailing arms are the same, as well as the front control arms. The rear 180b cradle is slightly different to a 1600 though, the mounting eyelets are offset on a 180b.

For the front you can use Z31 or HR31 hubs on R31 struts. I actually have a brand new set of 5 stud front hubs with caliper brackets to suit if you or anyone else is interested, to suit nissan 4 spot calipers. The hubs were machined from a block of steel and are brand new, pretty nice bit of kit to look at.

No I'm not after a 5 stud conversion, just interested to understand the compatibility across Nissan models.
Sounds like a relatively cheap and effective upgrade though, with bigger brakes, bearings and probably more wheel options I'm guessing.
