gday all,
well. i have been down to brissie to see a bloke that does a zillon ca18 conversions into 1200's....he had like 5 sittin in his shed.

no he said that he uses the r31 skyline fuel tank in all of his conversions and that it would work in a 1600. he said he has no worries getting them though rego and that. just wonderin why not many people have done this or if they have is it good.

basicly you can either cut out the spare wheel well and drop it in. he said it looks like a drop tank. or just bolt it in above the wheel well.

Id have to ask..why?

does the tank have an internal fuel pump ect? is that the only reason?

50-60 odd litres for a skyline tank.

internal baffles (no need for surge tank, have to sell that)

intank fuel pump. (doh have to sell mine now)

under 100 buck for a wreckers

priceless

Yeah but f##k man, couple of things;

1. I wouldnt forgive myself for cutting up a 1600 like that.

2. If you want a drop tank, buy a torana...

If you already have the surge tank and pumps, why not just install them?

Sorry, I just really dont like drop tanks or torana's for that matter.

godzilladat. you can either cut out the wheel well or just bolt it in.

id do it for a few reasons.....more fuel, a internal fuel setup is going to be way better and its cheaper (only if i hadnt got the pump and surge tank)

i think that the skyline tank will be better for fuel delivery and pure size. but it will take up a fair whack of space in the boot. not that i will be using it much anyway.

mate

you can fit an internal fuel pump to a 1600 tank. You just grab an internal fuel pump holder bracket from an r31 skyline. Cut a hole in the tank that is the same size as the thickest part of the r31 holder . Weld a ring at this cut out hole which is the same size as the mount plate at the top of the r31 holder for bolting the holder too. Bolt a small swirl pot inside the 1600 tank to one of the baffles.(this is where te fuel pump gets its supply from) Not sure if all 1600 tanks have these internal baffles. Then just grab an aftermarket walbro internal fuel pump route the fuel lines from the holder and off you go.

This is what Jeff Shoesmith did to his car and he swore by it. IE no lean out around corners etc.

Anyway this is what I am planning as I don't want a boot full of a fuel system nor the sound of multiple fuel pumps.

any questions give us a yell

cheers all

what sells it for ME is that it holds more fuel and is already a internal fuel setup plus they are so cheap. i just saw this in a few 1200's and they look really good. i just wanted to know why people havent done this before??

it may look ugly but it will do the job good

Im not convinced about the internal baffles in the R31 tank.

Ive owned 2 R31's, 1 Turbo coupe, and under 1/4 full it would lose fuel pressure on hard corners / u turns.

My Silhouette has the same problem to a lesser degree, i think because softer suspension and about 50kw less power.

I would be cautious relying on the internal baffling / swirl pot of the R31 tank in a 1600 with hard suspension / turbo motor.

Just something to think about.. maybe keep the surge tank for a little while longer..... just in case

I just fitted a R31 wagon fuel tank into my TRX Bluebird (SR20DET, stiff suspension), and have had no issues with surge (yet)

Maybe it depends on the type of car and where/how the fuel tank is mounted?

i think you're all missing a rather crucial point here. :!:

where does your spare tyre go? if oyu've decide to leave it at home, are you all aware it is illegal to drive a vehicle on a public road without a spare tyre, jack and brace/spanner?

Yeah good point!

And the other crucial thing. If you remove your wheel well (to fit the tank), you are messing with the monocoque construction of the chassis. If you remove it, the rear end is not as well supported and you have to add material (tubes in the back) to strengthen it up.

Not in Qld.. found out it's not a roadworthy requirement to carry one. Good in some ways, but bad in others..
