Has anyone used a rivnut gun and inserts? I am thinking of getting one as it could be useful for my project. Is there any suggestions for brand etc? I found this on ebay seems reasonably priced.

I use one at work but its a wurth brand and is around the $600 mark and works really well but would be a bit impractable for you to get but that gun in the link looks like really good value

I only discovered rivnuts a couple of months ago, I can't comment on brands or the cost but their really good and make attaching parts to your car so easy. Definitely on my list of tools I'd like if money allowed.

Have you read the sellers negative feedback?

Yeah 600 is too much haha I looked at the feed back was good. There was another one for 95 plus post and it looks a little better quality but not as many rivnuts hmmm what to do lol

Cheap ones work ok, there is nothing special about them but you must go easy on the threaded mandrill as the smaller ones like M5 etc will break if the tool is squeezed too hard when compressing the rivets.
They are also known as Nutserts.
Handy for some stuff but you will be drilling a larger hole than if you were for a self tapping screw/bolt.
You can get zinc plated and stainless nuts.
They make life easy if say you are mounting a bracket on the strut tower for example and it is difficult to hold a nut on the rear of the panel and do up a bolt into it at the same time.
Ive got a good set but recommend you to try an inexpensive set as you rarely will need to use them...

Yeah good idea I was thinking of using it for mount fuel and brake lines also so I think it may be a good investment

They are an excellent idea. Neater and much stronger than a self tapper. For a Datsun, M6 and M8 are most useful, then M5. Got mine from Textron Avdel and had many years of good service from it..

I must mention too, the only downside to these is that if the bolt thread gets corroded or rusts to the rivnut, the nut can spin in the hole it has been rivetted onto as the small splines on the nut wont stop it from turning under alot of force.
Use anti sieze on zinc plated parts or for ultimate corrosion resitance us stainless rivnuts and bolts (i still use anti sieze with these aswell to minimise galling)...
