Power to weight ratio.

R35 weighs 1740kg. 480HP (back then for the 2009 to 2011 model)

Turbo ute weights what, 850kg? would only need about 250HP to have an advantage over the GTR in a drag race.

Or maybe the R35 driver was a rich numpty that didn't know how to work the launch control.

Now put them round a track....
1200 specifically setup for drag. R35 setup for everything.

Idiots in HSV's for sure.

the ute would have a slight edge too if it was using slicks and the gtr was using street tyres.
The gtr is claimed to do an 11.6sec qtr in std trim so i reckon it would beat the 1200 ute if it had slicks and a decent launch...

Pretty easy actually, an old light car with a few mods to suspension, brakes and old A series with turbo, on say a circuit like Wakefield, or Morgan Park, will do very well!

Even older model Datsun Sports 2000 with original spec very old school mechanicals, is able to nail SR20 Turbo and FJ20 Turbo equipped Datsun 1600's at some tracks.
On lap times, the 40+ year old Dato 2000, was just 1 second a lap slower than a then new Nismo R35 GTR set up for tarmac rallying.

It comes down to power to weight and ability to use it very effectively.

No GTR's but only old production sports race cars.
The MGBGT is running a 3.5 litre V8 with quad 45 DCOE Webers, and 10" slicks.

Same way as a motorbike beats a car 99% of the time in a drag race... power to weight.

That's why you can buy a brand new bike with rego & warranty that will run into the mid 9's and mid 140's. 300kg & 200hp!

Still there's nothing more enjoyable than a sh!tter chopping something shiny.
