Hi,

I live in the ACT and wanted upgrade the old L16 to an L20. Does anyone know what mods you have to do to pass rego in the ACT?

Is it as simple as a front brake upgrade? Do you have to get it engineered?

I didn't need to engineer the A14 I put into the 120Y after the A12 shat itself, they just said hmmm ok put the new number on the paperwork.

I think you can just tell them that it is a replacement engine and you couldnt find any L16's

especially as these engines are getting harder and harder to find I don't think they care too much, its not like you're putting in a turbo SR or somesuch.

L20B into 1600 is an authorised modification in SA.
The L16SSS makes a tad more power than the L20B,
so brakes etc. are up to it.

I wrote an email to ACT rego today and got this fine response

Thank you for your email.

In the ACT all modified production vehicles have to comply to VSB 14. I have enclosed a link to this document, go to the engine section 2.13 ENGINE CAPACITY of this document to look for the information that you require.
We strongly advised to check all details of the proposed engine conversion as per VSB14 document.
I have also enclosed a link to our web site listing all ACT Engineering Signatories.

Now i had already read these docs from other posts, but the question is, what is the power difference between an L 16 and L20? Is it more than 20%? Is this quoted in a manual somewhere in case rego say it is not allowed?

I think its only about 15hp difference and thats not 20%

And in the trans section of the vehicles standards yada yada it says a factory optional gear set or transmission, so therefor the standard power out put at the fly wheel would be the key which is my understanding, and if it at the wheels then it dosnt matter because it already states as Long as it is factory for that model it complies

These are basically the most important in section one, although not too clear, i do believe you can put an l20b in a 1600, and if not without engineering then im sorry for a waste of your time

No need for engineering

Fitting a manufacturer’s optional engine together with any associated components as
supplied by the manufacturer for that same model vehicle;

Fitting equivalent engines with an increase of up to 20% of original power.

Need for engineering

Modifying the engine and engine components that results in an increase in engine power of more than 20% and/or affects exhaust emissions.

Assuming the NCOP applies in the ACT (it should) then you should be able to fit a 100% standard L20B with no engineering required - just change the engine number.

However, I would confirm that locally.

And yes, rotaries are considered to be 2x capacity so 12A is ~2.3 and 13B is ~2.6.

Does this apply to NSW now??

Or do you still need an engeneers cert for a l20b in a 1600 in NSW?
