I haven't done the conversion, but have a lot of experience with Toyota boxes. The W55-W58 box is larger in many respects than the 71C CA/SR boxes, and the original 'steel case' W50 box is, while maaaaaaarginally smaller, going to be hard to find in good condition and is markedly less strong (particularly 5th gear) than the later Toyota/Nissan boxes.

The only plus is that it is a detachable bellhousing which in my opinion makes for a nicer/neater conversion than (say) a Z32 or R33 box.

I think you would be better persisting to fit a 71C.

For your interest, R154 "supra turbo" box next to a W50 "steelcase celica" box:

And Toyota boxes T50/W50/W58/R154.
