I allow 40kg.
I have a four speed in the shed, and around 20 varios five speeds, never checked if speedo drives are same, if i remember tomorrow, i'll rip it out and check!

F4W71B and FS5W71B through '79 are interchangeable. '80 and on will interchange also but not with those before 80. All post '80s FS5W71B will fit the FS5W71C boxes. You can cut a new key way 180 degrees from the one on them and and a pre '80s will now swap with a post '80s pinion. I simply used a 6" angle grinder and nicked the side when I installed a '79zx 5 speed with an '85 720 diesel tail on it. Basically the earlier pinion must be installed upside down after '80..

The F4W63 and the FS5W63A dogleg pinions interchange.

Well, thanks d. I'm afraid that some info may not apply down there, so take with a grain of salt.

grains of salt are good for datsuns its the large grains that cause the rust

While we are on the 71 series boxes does anyone know if the d21 f71b stumpy
is as short as the d21 f71c stumpy? I dont have a 71b stumpy to measure yet
I remember the 71b stumpy weighing in about 35kg.

I have a 'stumpy' from a mid '80s 720 4x4 with Z24. It's the same length as the old 510s F4W63 and the FS5W63A dogleg.... about 26.3"

The front cases for the 71B and 71C are the same, in fact you can swap them. I have measured them from the very front to the back using this method.... Stand the transmission up on a couple of 2x4s. Place a straight edge across the very end where the driveshaft fits. Measure down vertically (not on the slope) from the straight edge to the front surface of the bell housing.

71B longs are............ 31.5"

71B short,
F4W63 and
FS5W63A (doglegs)..... 26"

Haven't seen to many 71C types here. The D-21 C appears to be closest to the 71B long. The S13 and S14 are longer. Many have measured the length for me and everyone measures them differently so the lengths are suspect. Will have to find one and do it myself.

Since all the bells are usually equal length and for different engines I measure the important bit from the centre plate to the gear lever centre as this is the important bit. It all helps though just need to subtract the bellhousing now :)

roughly the difference in stumpy boxes
