have a 1974 1200 ute with the original black rectangle style dash, the fuel gauge works to an extent but does not go completely up.

any ideas, and i know it works because it has stayed on half for a long while and then gradually goes down indicating fuel running out, it is like the needle doesnt have enough power to go all the way to full,

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

there's a coil of wire (on a 1600) fuel sender that makes contact with a wiper arm thats connected to the float. If your 1200 is similar it could be possible that the wire is that worn it has broken at one point therfore not registering anything higher or alternatively it may not be contacting the wire at all due to wear.
Remove the fuel sender from the tank and inspect it for wear. (obviously drain the tank beforehand if required)
