Hows the wagon going?

Can you re-post the pic of your grille after paint?

Hey mate between work and Uni I just haven't had time to do anything at all. Ideally I'd like to strip her back to bare metal but she's currently got a leaking head which needs to be fixed first, and uni starts on the 22nd :x
I was quoted something like 1400 from someone for a full respray in the original colour which seems to be quite a lot, got a card off a friend but yeah been too busy, it's driving me nuts because it's just so bad...

So the wagon is (un)happily rusting away whilst I grind through my last bit of uni, for hopefully my life (starting honours this semester...), however the engine has decided to start blowing a lot of smoke and making all sorts of exciting noises.
Did some shopping around for an A14 replacement, found one locally but the bloke wanted far too much for it, however I thanks to some connections I've got mates rates for a rebuild on the bottom end, and I'm going to pick up a 32/36 (found a new kit for 300ish aud on ebay before shipping). Hopefully a bit of mild engine work and the 32/36 should speed things up a bit :)

So stay posted guys!

On the bright side too I've picked up a sweet grad position at a large company which I start in march next year providing uni goes well, meaning I'll finally have enough money to paint her! Looking at doing a really nice job on it and picking up a new car in the interim (I have a rotary itch that needs scratching so thinking s2-3 rx7 maybe), next year should be great :D

Realised I never said that I installed the tacho tyrie gave me with a friends help, thanks for that it's a very useful addition :D

So anyway progress over the weekend:

Engine/gearbox removed, engine stripped ready to send off to engine builder when I get the go ahead (friend of my uncles so he's giving me mates rates on everything). Degreased most of the engine bay (missed behind the damn crossmember haha) so that showed up a bit of rust i'll hit with rust converter.

Weber 32/36 with electric choke is on the way from spain, mentioned it in the previous post, ended up costing me AU 350 which was a steal imo. :woohoo:

Gearbox is getting the input shaft repaired (sleeved and machined) to fix up the rattle in there, muffler is being replaced as I blew a hole in it when it backfired one day. If the money stretches enough I might put in a new system from the extractors back, local exhaust shop quoted me 250 for a 2" system, which seems pretty cheap and give me a note to boot.

Should go pretty well, engine is absolutely shagged atm, timed 0-100 at 23.5 seconds (shifting 500 below redline as I didn't want to try my luck), which is hella slow even for a 120y

I would have preferred to fix the body first but the engine sounded like it was going to go on me and I need the car to get to uni.

*edit pics*
*edit 2 holy picture size batman I'll work it out later, never tried using pics off my own site before*

Head looks in good nick. 2" exhaust is about as big as you'd want to go on an a-series no matter how warm (forced induction excluded of course). I wish my ute and sedan bays and engines were that clean :-(

Yeah I had it done last year, all I'm getting done there hopefully is heavy duty valve springs as I intend to visit the redline a bit more once I'm confident the engine functions right

Yeah I'll be getting stuck into the engine in my 1200 wags soon I hope, making it SSS spec for my 1200 sss sedan replica but with a couple of twists to it, hoping to get it to safely get up around the 8kRPM mark.

Ah nice nice, I'm not doing any mods to mine that involve cutting metal as I intend to restore mine down the track when I have more funds.

Got a buildlog for that wags? :)

Look up 1200 SSS on datsun1200.com's tech wiki section, no cutting of anything involved.

Nah, its the last project on my list ATM, but its getting the front end chopped off at the firewall (front subframes are rusted thru but the rest is OK), tube chassis front end with datsun 620 ute suspension, 620 ute diff, tri-carbed falcon 250 xflow 6cyl, walk off front end panels.

Sorry I posted that cutting metal thing out of context. It's just more a general annoyance as it can be a bit limiting at times, can't do crazy stuff to the engine etc.

IMO, the crazy engine stuff (ca18 conversion i'm guessing) isn't really worth doing on a datto. The amount of money and f***ing about that is involved, you're better off buying the car they came from.

With the exception of a car which is damaged/rusted beyond restoration for the road, like my wagon, where my opinion is go f***ing nuts lol

Dropped my engine off today at Al's Engines at oxley, shall report when I get it back, rather keen to have a 100% engine for a change :D

Well given the new cam and carbie it should be more like 120% :D

It's on the cards, trying to find one I can afford, probably will need a job first. I should have a poke around and see what people suggest for the A12, I remember something about one out of a pulsar for some reason...

Just a reminder for anyone around brisbane to have a look at my sig and contact me if you require IT services :)
