Hey, just thought I'd show you all my 1976 120y wagon. It's my first car, I'm the second owner, it's done either 290,000 or 390,000 (probably not 90,000, :P ) kays. The exterior paint is in horrible condition, but the body and interior isn't. The car was rust proofed by the original owner (my grandfather) and the rust proofing seems to have worked pretty good.
I paid 350 for it, and it came with a full tank of fuel, lead substitute, and two containers of oil. Fixed up the brakes, cleaned it, tuned it, registered it, right in time for me to get my p's. (I don't have the plates on in the pics)
I'll also have a bit of a worklog in here as I try to make it something a bit more unique, and any help along the way would be great. I don't know much about the engine side of cars, but I'm planning on learning from this one.
What do you use at these forums for image hosting? I'll use image shack atm unless you can reccomend something better.

It has a grill, i was just painting it when I took this picture

You should have seen it when I first got it. It was pretty bad, had mould on the doors and stuff like that.

Paint doesnt look too shabby. Awesome vinyl roofed wagon. Keep that for sure! :D

Tyries the biggest 120Y genius around, so he'd prolly be able to help you with specific 120Y stuff but pretty much everyone here knows a thing or two thatd help you out

You can upload pics here but i find it doesnt like more then 3 at a time

Whack some superlites or watanabes on it, lower it, retrim the vinyl and polish up the paint and itd look a million bucks. 8)

Thanks, that's the good side :P . It is polished too, came up a lot better after I used the cut in stuff. I like the watanabe idea too, something like that would be awesome, my friend was showing me some good rims, but they're pretty expensive, and I don't have much cash atm. They're worth saving for tho :D

Man, she look slike a mint wagon, good job keeping another datsun alive for a few more years

Tyrie will be the man to talk to about 120Y's, he only has a few :o and i'm sure he might have some spares too

anyway, a set of lowering blocks on the rear an lowered springs on the front, will greatly change the look of the old girl, slammed is good, esp in a wagon, as set of wide 13"s, not these cheese cutters, or a set of spacers to fill the guards, and she'll look better, reminds me of the mint 180b wagon on this site, (in the 180b pics section i think)

and a set of blackened 5% tinted windows would set it off

The great thing about Datsun is that provided they have a reasonable body and paint, you can put a set of mags on, and perhaps lower it, and it looks awesome! Not like these other vehicles that need a kit and spoiler to look even half good!

I'd lower it a bit, find a set of 13" mags, and see how you're going for money. Where are you located?

holy crap dude I want to have your wagon's babies! :hail:

What do you mean the paint is horrible? It looks fkn mint! And a vinyl roof on a wagon, what more could you ask for??

I was going to say let me know if you need anything (other than the tacho) but it looks like everything on it is better than what I've got!

I would also say 90,000 or 190,000 is quite possible given the condition, especially of the dashpad.

Thanks, but it's not really mint, the pic doesn't show it well but the dash is cracked (not the end of the world), and the paint is starting to flake off now.
It's hopefully going to be good when I'm finished with it though (but are you ever really finished?)

Minor update, i've been a bit busy finishing year 12 and working full time to even touch the car recently. So far all that's done is that my dad and I pulled out the gearbox and replaced some bearings and the clutch. The gearbox still is making some funny noises so I'm looking out for a new one, see my wtb thread. I also added some 6x9's in the back, but that's about it.
Now, for a bit of fun over christmas a mate from sydney (Travis, owns the poo brown corolla, ae86 neo if you know him on those forums, mad car  ) brought up a wheel for me to test fit. It's a 14x8 rim and OMG it was awesome, the dish made it that much better  . Unfortunately due to the way the front discs are shaped I can't fit any sort of wheel like that on there, and the bolts didn't fit on, but it certainly gave me some ideas

Currently I'm hunting down some wheels, gearbox and engine (worked engine would be tops :D ). Also I've decided that the car will need a paint soon, although it's quite rust free atm, as more paint falls off i'm getting worried it'll start developing more rust :?
Anyway, here's a pic when i had the wheel on the car, I think that to keep the cops happy and keep it looking somewhat cool, 13x6ish perhaps would look good on the back. Without trying one in real life tho it might be a bit hard to gauge.
Let me know what you all think.

Nice work! Any idea what that wheel is? It suits the 120Y very nicely I think.

I think rebuild your own engine to the specs you want. Keep it all matching numbers.

No idea on the wheel sorry, I agree tho, love it, but a bit out of my price range (i think he paid 200 per rim without tyres?). I was thinking with the engine to get another one incase I poo up my current one?
I should have some updates soon too, i'll hopefully have around 1.2k to spend (depending on tax) and plan on getting new paint (it's peeling off really badly) and whatevers left will be spent on the engine.
For paint I was thinking an orange for certain, I love a bright car (was thinking orange with a yellow pearl, or just the stocko paint, but I don't know what Flame Orange looked like originally). This I believe will cost around 800-1k, I was going to get a quote this week but it looks like I won't be able to thanks to work.
The engine though is where I'm stuck. I was thinking of getting a weber 32/36 for it, but that's the extent of my knowledge. I'd like it to go a fair bit harder, but due to money constraints it'll have to be done over time. Can you stroke or bore these engines out to say 1.3 or 1.4L? Is there enough meat to do that? I'd put in a new engine, but as far as I know if it needs to be engineered in QLD, thanks to the f*(@ing QLD P plate laws I can't legally drive it . Apparently I will kill myself or something? Anyway I have to stick with the A12 for now.
What else is there apart from the 32/36 that I can do for an okay price? I have an uncle and a friend who both have a workshop that might do work for me cheaper.
Wheels and lowering will come as well, but aren't as big a priority. I want to stop it from rusting and make it go better first!
Any ideas on costs or what to do would be great! Thanks

The mag wheel looks like a SSR Mk 2. They can get a bit pricey.

Top wagon, they are by far my favourite shape, second only to the panel van.

Love the vinyl, it's giving me ideas for the panno... Tick Tock Tick Tock goes the brain... Curse seeing things like that. It changes the profound brain things going on inside my head. I would imagine that the chrome trims would be near impossible to find. Whatever you do, don't remove that vinyl, what you find underneath may make you regret it.

The standard engine can be overbored up to 77 mm (73mm standard) which gives 1310 cc's. To get this size you get 1 mm over A14 pistons. Smaller sizes are available, but this is the biggest you can go with just overboring. To get 1.4 litres you need to get an A14 crank, machine the crank throws down to clear, then bore it to 76 mm, using A15 pistons. Lots of work to duplicate a standard A14. A14's & A15's are available, you just have to hunt them up, they shouldn't set off any RTA alarms, & the difference is noticable. A set of extractors, plus a good tune on a standard A14/15 is my suggestion (they drop straight in) with a 32/36 weber off an escort would be a good start.

I actually know why the vinyl is there (as I'm the second owner), it was hailed on and my Grandad wasn't too happy with the repair so he got them to cover it in vinyl
SSR MK2 sounds about right, I hate my friend, he has heaps of awesome wheels :|
So a 32/36 off an eskie bolts on does it? I might look into that. As per engineering, I think to be 100% legit I'd need a blue plate as the 120y never came with an A14? I'd do that but then I'm nearly certain it's not legal for me to drive the car with the stupid QLD P Plate laws? I need my car and license to get to uni, so I can't risk them, or afford another car. D'oh!
If I did go the A14 route, I'd probably just go straight to an A15, I think the extra torque would be worth it. I'd need to get a new exhaust with that hey?

Alright, I'm having some trouble finding the correct paint code so I can repaint it the original colour (would love to change but I don't have the time or money to strip out the car yet and do it properly).
It's just going to be a quick and cheap job on the exterior to fix the flaking paint (which is leaving exposed metal in some places ). But, can't find the paint code. The original owner was adament it was Flame Orange, but as far as I can tell, that colour doesn't exists.
What I have found is a colour called Brick (Burnt) Orange, paint code 227 from http://www.ratdat.com/?page_id=25. Would this be the right colour? It's hard to tell, and I don't want to paint it the wrong colour, as the inside will look crap.
Also, what would be a good price for this (don't want to get ripped off), and what would it cost to re chrome the bars? Paint, new bars would make the car look soo much better (wheels will come after motor, suspension and brakes ).
Finally, I saw a Datsun ute with what looked like an A14/15 on the back, and presumeably one still in it, for 500. Which utes should I look out for with the A15's in them? I've been reading through this information here http://jaw.iinet.net.au/cars/120y/a15.html, and it's been quite interesting, and I was planning on taking a similar route. Some of his stuff is a bit dodgy IMO, but most of it seems solid enough.
What do you guys reckon? Oh, one more thing, what adaptors do I need to get the temp reader working? It was borked when I got the car, and me and dad have tried grabbing an adaptor which was 'supposed' to make it fit and it still doesn't work. I'm completely stumped on how to fix that.
