Hey Nik, going to keep the custom radiator i was using with the old setup, but have had to modify the outlets. Bit of a pain, but it will fit with more clearance than the bmw option.

After fitting the new cooler, ive noticed that engine temps have increased, probably due to the restricted flow. My small 12" thermo fan was kicking in way more often and staying on for alot longer. I started researching bigger thermos, spal and davies craig seemed to be the pick of the bunch but carried the price tag with them. The more i searched, the more i found people using EL or Au falcon fans. These ford assemblies consist of twin 13.5inch s-blade fans in a shroud, they are said to pull about 2800cfm. There was no way i could fit the complete assembly , so i went about separating the two fans, to my surprise, they actually separate quite neatly if you are prepared to sacrafice one (one fan was noisy anyway).
The bonus in using these fans is that the shroud helps maximise its cooling ability. Compared to my 12", the single EL fan pulls way more air (and alot more current, popped a fuse on first startup). You can actually feel the hot air being blown out under the car when its operating. Now the fan only cylces on for a minute or so before temps drop and it cuts out again. I must admit that clearance was a bit of an issue, but well worth the effort to fit it.

Great work Tony. I was eyeing of the AU falcon thermo fans a while ago thinking the shroud would be a good idea..

Hey leigh, these falcon fans really do crank, pity they are so fat that you need some decent clearance to fit them. AS for that spoiler, its just collecting dust in my garage. The carbon look doesnt really suit the car, if i use it i think i will paint it orange or maybe even crinkled black, havent decided.

what about painting it orange and leaving the very tip as exposed carbon? like this...

it would be a shame to cover it all up completely

Maybe sell it and get a golf spoiler?
Or persist with the golf CTi spoiler you already have? I'm still not convinced that it can't be used.

And now that you have your fan sorted out, have you noticed any gains with the larger cooler?

Tones,

Did you want to sell the spoiler? Is it a PARE composites?

In come the vultures :woohoo:

My car was getting pretty warm the other day, might look into it... What temp does yours sit on/get to when pushed?

Havent had the chance to really push it with this set up, but under normal driving conditions, engine temp is about 80 degrees. When stationary, fan kicks in at about 85 degrees and after a minute or so switches back off at 80 degrees. I did have a 90-85 switch but thought that was a bit high. What's everyone else's SRs operating temp, fan switch temps?

Mine switches around 85/86 and turns off around 82 from memory.

we run 92 on 87 off.
No probs with this setting.
You only need lower setting if your cooling system is not up to the task.
fan runs 7 seconds on 80 off at idle.

Depends where the temp sensor is picking up too. Mine is the factory temp for the ECU (above the water pump kind of near the inlet manifold) and I have my gauge sensor right next to that.

My sensor is tapped into the water neck coming out of the head, so i would say that it is getting a reading from the hottest point of the system.. Ie water leaving the motor. I Put the cooling system to the test today, 30 odd degree day here in Melbourne and had to make a trip into the city. Fan worked a treat and was only cycling on for a minute or so before cutting out when the temps dropped back down. Funny thing I did notice was that the fan did a better job of bringing the temp down than when I got back onto the freeway. It almost runs cooler in traffic!!!!

Can also agree that those fans are great value for money.
Many of the silvia guys run them, and can be had for $40-50 if you hunt around.
Only downside is the width.
