Hi guys

Will need a collapsible column for the 1600.

Being relatively new to Datsuns, what is the done thing?

NB: I have searched, but there is a lot of noise regarding changing steering boxes, steering ratios, etc, etc.

I am really after the easiest (read: cheapest) conversion for the basic purpose of passing engineering / improving safety.

The easiest way is to find a factory collapsible steering column and steering box. Pretty sure these came out around 1970-1972 on Aussie 1600's...

Cool beans, I'll see what I can do.

So, you need to change the box as well? Is it as a result of the column being a different diameter, or just a different length?

Yeah, the later collapsible design is different. It has a splined connection to the steering box like this:

Take note the collapsible column is a larger diameter to the early 'spear' type (approx 38mm versus 33mm).
You will also need a new indicator switch and most likely an ignition switch and column surround to suit aswell...

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't thought that far ahead.

The car has a gutted interior so I am sure that it will all become apparent very quickly...!

I have a 1600 built 7/71 but it has a spear column.

I thought they were required to be collapsible by 1970?

Any one got a spare collapsible one for sale?

If you have a genuine '71 aussi built 1600 fitted with a "spear type" column it has been retro fitted into an Australian built 1600, or perhaps your car has an imported body shell? My imported '71 1600SSS has a spear column. Check the ID plate and note where the body was assembled.

The collapsable column and the "spear column" designs are very different. Most of the steering column size differences are noted in one of the previous posts, all good information to note.

The major design difference is that the spear type has the steering box integrated with the steering column tube, whereas the collapsable column tube is separated by a uni joint at the steering box. The Aussi collapsable column can be fitted to any "non collapsable built" (imported) 1600 , with very small modifications to the plate that seals the column at the floor pan, and the under dash bolts. It will bolt up to either a late model (70 - 72 Aussi built) 1600 or any 180B steering box, which are identical to the late 1600 (collapsable column) steering box.

In short you need both the complete collapsable steering column and a matching steering box for the swap. By the way, the spear type columns are very hard to find in good condition, so dont throw it away!

.

Compliance plate shows it's built by Nissan Motor Co (AUST), so I guess it must be a retro fit as it is definitely as you describe with no uni joint at the steering box. The shaft just enters the box as one piece.

Out of interest it is ADR 10A - all cars manufactured on/after 1 January 1971 required collapsible columns.

Yours wouldn't be the first though, if I remember correctly mine is a 6/71 and it had a standard-type column also. Who knows what kind of dodgy sh*t happened back then & also what kind of dodgy sh*t has happened in the last 42 years since our cars were built :)

Maybe they did that with all 1600's for a bit after the law, my 1200 coupe (4/71) has a colapsable column
