Hi Guys,

Looking fior some advice on how to remove the worm bearings outer races from a Steering box,

I have a 4 bolt 180 thats needs a rebuild and need to remove the brg outer races so I can get some new ones.

Any one done this before?

Anyone with a 4 bolt 180 Box cheap.

Cheers

John

Not sure what you mean by "4 bolt" or "180".
Ahhhhh! the 4 bolt is the box with the centre distance between worm shaft to sector shaft of 47mm, yes?
I have the 610 [180B] Service Manual which describes tear down and re-assembly of the 4 and 3 bolt steering box.
If that is what you need I can scan it for you

I have recently rebuilt my 1600 steering box. I could only get one bearing cup out. The one opposite the sector shaft where the spline comes out i tapped it against my bench and it moved enough for my blind bearing puller to get underneath it. I tried the same for the other bearing cup but it would not budge. So i left it in and just replaced the non cup side.

Cheers,

Richard

I've never pulled a steering box apart, but it sounds similar to the cup and cone bearing setup in old motorbike steering heads. If so, my uncle used to get them out for me by running a small bead of weld around the inner bearing surface of the cup, it couldn't expand due to being held tightly by the frame, but would contract ever so slightly when it cooled - just enough to loosen it.

Steering box bearings may also be a bit small for this ? Just a thought !

There is likely to be a pair of notches in the box casting to allow a pin punch to bear on the rear of the outer shell, much like you see in the front wheel hub. Use a brass punch and hit on each side evenly and the outer should start moving out.
Or take it all to a steering/transmission repairer and let them worry about it :)

In my 1600 box there were no notches unfortuately, i guess the 180b box would be very similar if not almost identical.

Cheers,

Richard
