If this thread was meant to say "How do you fit an R-180 into a 1600" i wanna know the answer.

I've heard "they bolt on" but that's the end of it...

Anyone got a decent answer?

Anyone know what sort of horsepower you can put through 240K/C210 driveshafts before they go snap?

OR, does anyone have a car with 240K/C210 half shafts fitted, and have a nice amount of horsepower at the rear wheels?

OR, does anyone have an SR20DET or FJ20ET with a few mods with an R180 diff and running 240K/C210 half shafts :) (made it clear for you!)

What are your experiences?

I would suggest (based on my experience only) that r180's are quite capable of handling at least 150rwkw. Now this depends on a number of factors mainly how you drive the car and grip level available. If you consistently slam gears and you have soft rear suspension combined with grippy rubber it will not last. R200 it (Japanese 9inch)

Example, I had an r160 in my FJ20T 1600 (r200 was undergoing firs repair) and with just me in the car I was spinning it up first, second and third without a problem. Put three blokes in the car, slammed second and it blow instantly as the car got grip and the jolt immediately broke the spider gears.

A properly consructed r180 locker may even survive more rwkw but it may take it's toll on half shafts & uni joints etc.

My rally car has a 4.875 locker in it (Hi, Dazda!), and the diff holds up fine.

It's the halfshafts that will fail if anything (in my experience). I've busted 2 in 3 events.

But then again, my rally car is likely to have much higher shock loads than a road car. But I'm only putting out 70-ish RWkW.

Fro, you shouldn't be busting half shafts unless they are the wrong length. I asume they are breaking where they taper?
Just at the end of the splines...

Even with an LSD on dirt they should still hold up... or are you running a Locker :?

EDIT: just read you do have a locker.. There's your problem..
Yeah, the locker isn't ideal, but it's better than an open diff on dirt...

I'm no rally driver but,

When I cane the skyline around dirt roads, having the inside un-loaded wheel spinning in the loose stuff really slows you down. Having an LSD [edit] CIG locker :D [/edit] would make a bit of difference to the amount of power you could put down..

Not to mention better power oversteer!!!

(Driving on dirt's the only way I can get the stupid thing sideways.... MWWAAAhahahaha...)

This is starting to sound like a similar thread on the BMSC website.

I dont think it is worth it to spend $2000 on a LSD for a $6000 rallycar. It may be worth looking at if I had a burning desire to win a rally, or it was a more expensive car, but for a clubman level driver at the back of the pack I dont reckon you'd be getting the appropriate return on your investment from spending that much.

Contrary to what alot of people have said, I find the locker great to drive on the dirt - no understeer, it hasnt tried to spit me off the road yet, etc.
(The ratio change might have alot to do with that though, and yep, agreed - it is an absolute pig to drive on the bitumen!)
