:) Hey guys,

Iv got a four door Datsun 720 ute L18 with a 4 speed box in it,

I'm currently in the process of doing a complete rebuild to the L18 dia webbers n all that jazz,

But I really want to put a 5 speed in it, as it desperately needs 5th... this is my first project for reference.

It's an 82 model I'm pretty sure so my question is what sort of box will go in easiest? Or even fit?, I hear these words dogleg n what not getting thrown around and I'm getting confused, all your wisdom will be greatly appreciated guys!
My grandad gave my the car when he passed away, now I know my way around an engine but I'd love some tips and pointers

A dogleg is a box which has 1st upper left or lower left instead of part of the typical H pattern: -

Reverse can be as shown or on the lower right usually.
Any L series 5 speed is compatible with the L18 even those from the Z cars [up to the 280ZX only].
I have an R30 Skyline 5 speed stumpy box available :chaching:
Where are you located: you can put that in your "Profile" page.

Hi Graeme,

Thank you for your response it's been a great help,

I'm looking at purchasing a box in the near future but am just doing my research at the moment

I'm in Canberra A.C.T, just as a query how much you selling ur box for?,

And would it even fit/be compatible with mine? And would I have to change anything?

Thanks mate

Jack

You need to do some measuring of your current setup i.e. where the gearbox x-member is from the engine block.
Sometimes you need a custom made gearbox x-member and a custom length tail shaft, it all depends on the choice of components.
If you want I can give you the dimensions of the 5 speed so you can do some dreaming :)

I had an L18 in my 1600 with a 78 skyline 5spd (C210). Like Nissanman said any L series gearbox will bolt up. You cannot use an L20 or any of the 6 cylinder flywheels due to a different stud pattern. If you find/fit a 6 cylinder gearbox it will be harder for you to break it.
