has any body got any ideas thet may be causing this. my 180b has a shake at 80 ks . it is lowered but the shaking was there before. i have replaced all bushes in the front end , all shocks and springs. i have been under the car for a week now trying everything, tightened every nut that was loose i could find, ( tailshaft , front sway bars, all mounts, steering ) , still shakes, the tyres are good, tail shaft straight with all the weights still on. The car is an auto, does anybody think it could be a buggered stally or something. It only does it at 80 ks , in top gear . While im on the topic of gearboxes does anybody have an idea or can recomend somewhere that can reco a sss four speed and install. i have pedal box and all the major parts but not alot of room or time to do the work myself. Any imput im all ears

sounds like you need a wheel balance

what shakes exactly? can you localise the vibration, ie does it come through the steering or floor/body?...

Just a guess but im guessing the uni joints in the tail shaft, only happens when its spinning fast enough i.e. 80km/h. If it was your stallie or gearbox related you would expect it to happen in every gear over a certain RPM. mate had a torrana that had the same symptoms a while back and turned out to be the uni's.

Check that the output shaft in the trans isn't wobbling all over the shop and check your unis, along with any centre bearing, it's rubber mount & uni joint/CV joint if it's a two piece tailshaft.

Otherwise yeah try a different set of wheels and see if that effects anything. Stuffed bushes won't normally make things vibrate

If it goes away after 80kph, spend $20 bucks down the local tyre shop and get your wheels balanced. :D

balance - to check swap wheels from front to back and see if it gets better/worse

Update , had the full balance and steering box attended to and shaking still there at exact point as it always was. Starting yo get worried that this is going to be expensive. in for a full undercar inspection, and will post results for any body else with the same problem. Thanks for all opinions posted just goes to show that all situations are different and any imput from any one can help.

do the uni joints in the tail shaft, i reckon that's what it will be, not much to fix either

Datldo, you still havent said where the shaking is coming from approximately, e.g. if the steering wheel is shaking (i.e. its coming from the front end) or that the trans tunnel is vibrating (i.e. uni-joints)...

p.s. wheel balances are overrated.

Have you put it on stands and checked the unis?

hi from south africa. I have the same problem on my 1800J sss[stanza 1979] and it is driving me to drink!!I have had the propshaft balanced and even the wheels.I found that the rear brake drums were out of balance as well.I had my son tow me at 80kph with no propshaft and the car was smooth!.
Can the axle bushes cause the shake or the gearbox output shaft bearing or the pinion bearing on the diff? I have had the car for 27 yrs and now am GATFOL of the vibrations

Well if it was your brake drums out of balance the shaking would not go away when you removed the tail shaft. worn uni joints can cause vibrations. If it is only occurring above a particular speed then that rules out the drive line in front of the gearbox and if it goes away with the tail shaft removed then that rules out wheel balance and between the rear wheels....... not too many options left

That might be too much of a blanket statement Wise. Coasting at a speed may generate a different vibration to driving at the same speed under load
