i can get hold of a R33 short nose R200 VLSD fairly cheap!?! would it be worth bothering to try and fit it under my 240K or is too much work??

i was going to say the same thing, although from the pic, the r180/r200 look close...

what about a measurement diagonally from top left bolt to top right bolt (the rear PCD as such) of the rear cover.

if someone has their diffs throw the measurements up and we'll all have a plastic ruler with us when we go shopping for diffs.

The latter :(

Short nose has, well, a short nose  . The diff housing is much shorter, so its nowhere near a bolt-in proposition. The short nose diffs don't form a structural part of the rear end like the long nose ones do, so you need to engineer some extra strength in there.

And once you get it bolted in, you need to work out what to do for driveshafts. R33 CV-style driveshafts are completely different to 240K ones.

Its do-able (and has been done in a 1600), but nowhere near bolt-in.

I have managed to get hold of a c31 laurel L20A turbo parts car... the interior has been stripped, but it's pretty much intact mechanically. I have a c31 also with a z20 and auto with a live axle. what series diff would be in the turbo?

I have 3 R180's here and am curious about the markings on the main housing... they all have

"T214" on them, does this by chance relate to the diameter of the crown wheel, hence making it an R180?
and would the other numbers, like "74/7 T53" and "78/3 T83" have anything to do with ratios..
my guess is 74/7 and 78/3 are probably year/month of manufacture, the T83 and T53 i'm not so sure of.

I'm going to open them up this arvo and count teeth to see what ratios I have available to me, just interested if anyone knows if these
numbers can help identify ratios quickly (assuming it's never been opened and switcheroo'd of course)

Can't help with the numbers, but most diffs I've opened have the ratio stamped on the side of the crownwheel - will say something like 37:10 (ie 37 crownwheel teeth to 10 pinion teeth)

so they were 39:8, 39:10 and 39:11
therefore 4.875, 3.900 and 3.545

Take the center out of the short nose and put it in a long nose R200 housing. Then you just need to fit the long nose R200 in place of the R180 under the K.

There's a thread on how to swap the centers on here somewhere if you search for it.

If you need bushes to adapt your VLSD crownwheel bolts to your longnose crownwheel, PM me.

diff question...

can the crown wheel & pinion be swapped from an early R180 to a later R180 (with "K" stamp) ??
anyone checked this out in the past? I am aware that the carrier is a different size, but do the gears fit?

reason: I have a 3.9:1 R180 in an early type housing, but I intend on fitting an LSD centre that suits the "K" stamped R180.
I have both diffs, but the "K" is a 4.875 which I don't want for a daily driver.

I believe you can put the early crown & pinion in the K housing but not vice versa. But I don't think the K lsd center fits in the early crown because early pre '77 crowns were 110mm id whereas post '77 crowns were 115mm id. If you are interested in selling the 4.875 crown & pinion though let me know as I'd be interested.
