just wondering how many kms people get out of a full tank of petrol in a L20B
with a standard carby, driving normally

im only gettin 300kms (if that)

timing, plugs, leads, mixture are all adjusted properly

how many litres is the tank again
i used to get around 8km per l and i thrashed it everywhere

then i added a cam and a webber it was more like 4km per l i miss my old girl

i just love the lump

Im getting around 11km to the L from my datto 180b with a stock L 18 in her, so out of a 55 litre tank, thats over 500k's to a tank! how hot is ur motor???!!!

well, i got the radiator professionally flushed
i changed the water pump
changed the whole thermostat (thermostat, housing, base, gaskets, etc)
car is still running on hot by the temp gauge
but i got the motor and radiator laser temperature checked and pressure checked and the temperatures were normal
so no sign of overheating

i am gettin a cluster soon that i bought off ebay last week so i'll see how the temperature gauge goes

i'm thinking it has to be carby issues
cos i had the spark plugs, timing, leads, and points all changed

i'm thinking about changing the carby to a downdraught carby with webbers

so im searching the forum for some information

i also tried grounding the temperature sender wire from the thermostat housing to see if the temperature gauge went to hot and it didnt move, so im guessing the receiving end (cluster) is having issues

as for fuel consumption, i am still deciding whether to pay to get the carby reconditioned or change to webbers....

one problem is fixed, and another one comes up

Not being a smart ass, but are you sure it isnt your driving style? You might be surprised at the improvements you can get by driving economically eg slowing down for lights a little earlier, easing on and off the throttle so you stay off the accelerator pump etc etc

Have you run a compression tester over it? If you have a cylinder or two that has dropped a bit of compression that will affect your fuel consumption.

if you're worried about fuel consumption changing to webers probably isnt your best option

i was thinking that if its normal that im drinking a bit
i might as well go with webbers for bit more power for the petrol im tearing through

I ended up getting 8L/100K with my L18 with a SSS cam, and an 1"3/4 volvo SU. This was using an R30 5 speed gearbox (I think it had a 3.9 auto diff, and large ish 14" wheels)

Webbers aren't going to be good on fuel! SU's are excellent for economy, but single SU's aren't good for top end power (unless it's a 2" Jag SU...). Try and get twin SU's and find someone that can tune them, and you'll be laughing.

how much do they cost
are they downdraught or sidedraught
you need an adaptor plate dont you?

tuning the thing is not a problem as my mate's dad has been an expert in tuning carbies for 30 or so years

its just that i cant get to his workshop atm because the carby is playing up

i'm looking around now to find some to put on my 200b L20


oh another question

what fuel are you guys running
are you using any aditives/valve saver ???

I always ran the 'premium' which is the closest to leaded fuel (from what I have been told), it has an octane rating of around 95 to 96 depending on what company it is.
Using unleaded fuel in the L series motors isn't that bad because they have the hardened valve seats, but adding some upper cylinder lubricant into the fuel, or lead additive just keeps the engine lasting that little bit longer. (if you rev the rings of her )

The fuel you use depends on your timing. My car was setup for 95/96. If I filled up with 91 (general unleaded) it would ping when it was hot weather

Mobil 98 only. Sometimes put Boost98 in the stagea, better for the environment.

My twin 45's drink the juice, but my motor isnt standard.

my timming has been set to the standard 200b l20 timing
when i turn the car off. it keeps running like its about to choke dead
then when i turn the car to on, it starts again
is this my idle
the only way i can turn the car off
is by stalling it

problem after problem!!!

With my webber, a 34/34, it didn't make any noticeable differences to power or consumption. But it did look better under the bonnet and sound better.
