Dear Datsun God,

Thank you for giving me the skills to turn an asthmatic, crap-handling, standard L18-powered, automatic 180b into a sightly less asthmatic, but equally crap-handling L20-powered, automatic 180b.

But please can you tell me why it is that a motor that is 200cc larger is still such a piss-poor power-plant? Is it because the 3-speed Jatco auto is friggin' useless in transferring the torque increase ... or is it because the datto is 40 years old?

Remember back in the day, like twenty-odd years ago, when I was just a young fella... and I prayed that you would help me convert my old SSS auto into a manual out in the backyard?

"Please, God... please, please, please... make this manual gearbox work?"

Remember that time?

Well, back then that L18 actually kinda hauled arse with an auto behind it. And it went better with a manual. So what's the go now, dude... why is this L20b doing diddly-squat in my orange four door? Is it because the auto is rooted? Or is it because you took away my engine rebuilding skills and made me assemble a 2litre with no power?

Please, Datto God, give me a sign or a path to follow that leads to heaven ... where heaven is a place that Datsun 180b automatics travel faster than maimed turtles.

Yours in hope
Batesy

PS: No offence, God .... but I'm gonna post this letter onto the OzDat forum to seek guidance from the other Datto Disciples too.... just in case there's any datto Gods there.

Did you swap over the intake and exhaust manifolds and carby?
May be time for a manual conversion and/or a carb upgrade!

Inlet manifold and carb from the L18. Exhaust from the L20.

Should have put a manual in when I did the motor. I've got two 4-speed boxes and tailshaft in the garage. I just didn't want to chase up the pedal box, clutch M/C, flywheel and clutch plate.

Got lazy as the project went on.

And poorer! :)

Unfortunately you have to be realistic about the performance of a forty-year-old car. These things went reasonably well for their day, but that doesn't mean a whole lot now. A manual conversion would certainly be a good start, it will unlock some lost power, but won't be the all-out solution. If you want a little bit more power, get a bigger carbie. If you want a lot more power, do an engine conversion.

Pray to a new god

Sacrifice another car to the Datsun god!

And then take your L20B to an engine builder and get them to rebuild it for more performance :)

Convert it too manual, put the head off the l18 and chuck that on if it's not on already, chuck in a bit better camshaft and throw on a set of twin webers and then see if it meets your expectations

Yeah I myself need to pray too.I have L 20 twin SU carbied motor and auto tranny to go into the wife's car.The missus and me are building two 4 door 1600's .A manual for me and unfortunately she is in a wheel chair and can only handle Autos these days,so an auto for her.Externally and internally both cars will essentially be clones. The only differance will be one auto and one manual. She reckons they should be plated HER 510 and HIS510.I have to basically double up on components.Like two sets of identical mags I have to chase up another SSS steering wheel and just about everything else too. They are going to look sweet parked side by side but Jesus it's going to be hard to make both cars as close to each other as I can.It should be a great opportunity to get quality time with my wife cause she will be sewing all the upolstery and hand polishing lots of bits and pieces whilst the two cars are up on the rotisseries.
