I've got around 3000 AUD now and will be looking to buy a car in around 2-3 years. Maximum 7500 AUD. I know a Datsun would be a viable option. But as my first car, I'm looking to buy muscle car. Yes, I know for 7500 I'm not exactly going to get a classic GT. I just basically want an Australian icon car. It must be drivable, straight body and in general good condition. I was thinking something like a XD 351, accept they are bloody v8's which by the time I get my first car will be banned. So basically I'm looking for an australian "muscle car" that's in good shape and would be a good first car. that's NOT a v8.

Yes, I know my options are extremely limited.

thanks for all advice.

Maybe a 6 cyl torana that has been mocked up with the SLR5000 body kit?

Doen't leave you many options

maybe a HQ kingswood/monaro with a warm 202, no point wasting money on those engines though, as they are shitboxes
Nice clean LJ torana would be good, relatively light

Ford cortina, early falcons with a 6cyl

My pick if it had to be australian and comply with the new P plate rules would be an LJ torana 2 door (with a 1JZ-GTE later on)

Thanks for the advice. I think the LJ might cost too much. Maybe an LH/LX with a 308?

A XR6 might be a good option hmm..

Or a Pacer?

A mate of mine had a VF with a farily heavily modified 265 in it. Went very very well!

i'd hold out on getting a piece of australian history for a few years mate.

if you go out and get oine and find you have to pour thousands into it to get it up to spec. as a $3000 old timer is going to no doubt cost cash!

i'm not saying a datto won't cost you cash but when you look at the cost of petrol and running costs in general. a nice 180B with SU's or something with some mods will be a whole heap of fun and you can put money away for the big toy project that can take you years to finish so it's done right....

there's nothing worse than seeing a cheaply done old school car, trying to look good, when corners have clearly been cut

Get a run around and a good job, then save for the right car, preferably one that is already restored to its former glory, you might be paying more outright for it, but in the end you will save thousands

I am a huge charger fan and a few years back that was going to be my first car :D around that time i was looking at one of the 318's with no rust for 5k in impact orange with r/t decals, and i didnt want to be borrowing a few k at that age so i let her slip, now she would be worth about 15k :( regret is a bad thing  all your aus muscle cars seem to have skyrocketed in price in the last few years :( toranas are still a viable option as you can get them for well under 1k for a LH with a 6cyl but a few of my m8s have them and i tell you they might look nice n all but they are 10 years behind the datsun, jap cars where always ahead, things like IRS etc the toranas didnt even have hazard lights! i would be going a cheap datto for your first car :P and maybe get a muscle as a resto project, you will get heaps less sh*t from the cops in a datto, they are nicer to drive, they are a mile ahead of holdens and fords parts are a heap cheaper and they are realy easy to work on and modify :D and if you get a 180b you can have your first smash in it and you can go get another one for 150 bucks and keep any mods you have done :P (not that we are allowed any engine mods at all on new p laws  )

with a budget of upto 7grand, yu wont get anything in great condition, maybe something restored 5-10 years ago, but just remember, new cars are getting really cheap and have all the mod cons and are a much nicer car to drive anyday of the week, make more power reliably, have power everything etc, but if its purely for the character then get some muscle car mags, street commodores mag, etc and browse through to see what you like

How about an Aussie R31 Skyline GTS. Not exactly what people think of as an Aussie muscle car, but worth considering.

They were made in limited numbers. I believe 200 GTS-1's in white and 200 GTS-2's in Red.

They got really good reviews back when they were released.

They are still fairly cheap. I've seen some on www.r31skylineclub.com for around $3500.

I think given there limited numbers, if you get a clean original one, and keep it original they will start to appreciate in value, like other limited edition cars do. I don't think they are going to get any cheaper than they are now.

Of course it will never be worth as much as a GTHO or GTS monaro.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the 260z.

You could get a decent 2 seater for $7k, or a very nice 2 + 2.

L series engines are simple as anything to work on, they are a classic shape, and cheap insurance. Look tuff as with a set of big wide jellybean mags.

2 seaters would be a sound investment, I reckon they will only go up in value.
